The doorbell rang through the haze of my half-dream state. I could have sworn my head hit the pillow minutes prior, but a fuzzy glance at my phone told otherwise. It was near eleven in the morning.

I was too excited to get to sleep right away after the mind blowing night I had. There was an instant connection between me and Garret. We kissed—a lot. But we also slow danced and talked for hours. When he dropped me off at my house we sat conversing in his car for so long, I felt ridiculous I hadn’t invited him in. But he was a perfect gentleman and walked me to the door for one last goodnight kiss. Then he rode off leaving me giddy. The last time I checked the time before drifting into dreamland it was after three in the morning. Now someone was at my door rousing me from my slumber with the ringing of the bell like a chipper early bird—except it wasn’t exactly early. Who comes to visit on a Sunday morning? It couldn’t be a delivery. In my almost conscious state, I must have been expecting Ari or maybe Girl Scouts because I opened the front door without consequence to my appearance. And I was mortified. Garret stood outside my entryway looking like Adonis in the glowing mid-morning sun. He wore casual slacks and a polo shirt that could have been painted on his finely sculpted muscles. I, on the other hand, had dried mascara caked on my eyelashes and who knew what garbled mess my hair was in. I would have smiled at the sight of him, but I was too concerned about my morning breath.

“Hello, gorgeous,” he beamed, raking his eyes over me. “I hope you’re hungry.”

“H-h-hungry?”

He presented the canvas grocery bag I somehow didn’t notice before and silently asked permission to enter. “I promised you pancakes.”

My stomach growled instinctively and I stood aside so he could come in. He planted a sweet kiss on my cheek as he strode inside my house—bigger than life. My early California Spanish style home wasn’t small by any means. But Garret filled the room with his tall, broad figure like he’d stepped in a doll house. He easily found the kitchen with no help from me—I was still stunned by his appearance—and immediately got to work laying out all the ingredients on the island, rummaging through my cupboards for mixing bowls and measuring cups. I noted he’d brought a brand new skillet and he saw me eyeballing the array of stuff taking over my kitchen and shrugged.

“I didn’t know what you had so I just brought everything I needed.”

I turned the baking soda over in my hand. “You could have called to ask.”

“I don’t have your digits,” he teased.

Oh yeah. Derp. I just stood there staring dorkily at his beauty and superior common sense. His eyes flickered over me in my drawstring pajama bottoms and thin cotton cami and something between a growl and appreciative hum sounded in his throat.
